The functioning of The Heart

The muscles of the heart are strong but may get weak over time as they are overworking. We have to eat well and strengthen those muscles so that heart can work efficiently. It is important to understand the heart’s functioning to understand the importance of the heart. Your heart works in a defined cycle called ‘Double Circulation.’ By this process, your heart ensures that every part of your body gets proper oxygen and can function correctly. Before you know the functioning of the heart, see the formation of the heart. Your heart is divided into four chambers
  1. left atrium
  2. right atrium
  3. left ventricle
  4. and right ventricle
  • Your lungs are connected to the left atrium of the heart through pulmonary veins.
  • The left ventricle is connected to your body parts through the aorta
  • Your right atrium is again connected to your body parts through the vena cava
  • Whereas your right ventricle is connected to your lungs through pulmonary arteries.
Let us understand the cycle of double circulation in steps
  1. When you breathe in, the oxygen gets in your lungs.
  2. The blood fills in your lungs with oxygen dissolves in it. We call it ‘oxygenated blood.’
  3. This oxygenated blood is pumped into your heart’s left atrium through pulmonary veins.
  4. The chambers of your heart are connected through a valve. It only opens when a chamber is filled with blood and transfers blood to another chamber, and shuts immediately.
  5. After your left atrium is filled with blood, the valve opens, and the blood is transferred to your left ventricle.
  6. Your left ventricle pumps blood to every part of the body.
  7. Every organ extract oxygen from blood and releases carbon dioxide in blood. The blood thus becomes deoxygenated.
  8. The deoxygenated blood is pumped back to your right atrium through the vena cava.
  9. The valve connecting the right atrium and right ventricle opens, and blood is transferred to the right ventricle.
  10. The right ventricle pumps the blood back to your lungs through pulmonary arteries.
  11. Your lungs absorb the carbon dioxide from the blood and exhale it out.
  12. The cycle continues with every breath.
The process is called double circulation because the heart is pumping twice for the circulation of blood. Once to get oxygenated and the other time for deoxygenated blood. See how hard your heart works. Thus, it needs food that can save your heart and ensure hits healthy and effective working.
